Start of the tournament season is upon the Vixens, with the first at Sprowston. Report by Alan Gadney

The Vixens were just one of the teams from Waveney that made the trip to Sprowston yesterday.

The under 12 league consisted of 5 teams meaning that the teams all played each other twice with a total of 8 games….Each game to last 10 minutes.

6 of the Vixens attended: Ellie Moore, Caitlin Gadney, Maddie Archbold, Charlea Flatt, Mimi Wescott and Shanice Ebbage. Without their regular goalkeeper, the task of goalkeeping was shared around.

Game 1:- vs Beccles
A bright start for the Vixens with Mimi scoring twice (after 3 & 9 mins) and Shanice scoring in the 6th min to give the Vixens a 3-0 win.

Game 2:- vs Sprowston
A change of goalkeeper to Maddie seemed to disrupt our momentum as we lost 5- 0. Some early goals and unenforced errors took the game away, bringing home the reality of how quick 5-a-side game is.

Game 3:- vs Waveney Foxes
Again a change of keeper with Charlea taking up the role for this match. A much better start from the Vixens however, again a loss. 3-0

Game 4:- vs Firside Foxes
This time Mimi went in goal. With some excellent attacking and defending from both teams,.this game ended up a draw 0-0. A much improved performance from the Vixens, who were now getting the idea of 5-a-side play.

Game 5:- vs Beccles
2nd round and back to Beccles again with goalkeeping shared between Caitlin and Charlea who played 5 mins each. This time Shanice scored after 2 & 9 mins and a third from Mimi in the final seconds of the game got the Vixens.back to winning ways with a score of 3-1.

Game 6:- vs Sprowston
Mimi was in goal again. A much improved game from the Vixens with some strong defending and midfield play and early chances for the both sides. The match was lost 2-0 but a better performance than the first match against Sprowston

Game 7:- vs Waveney Foxes
Once more Mimi was in goal. This time the girls started really well with lots of close efforts and some real pressure but the ball never quite droped in the right place for a clear strike. A breakaway goal from the Foxes saw us lose 1-0 …but again a much improved performance from the first match.

Game 8:- vs Firside Foxes
This time Caitlin was in goal. A bad start and an early goal set Firside on their way. Another unforced error saw Firside take a 2-0 lead but the Vixens showed grit and determination and came into the game with a goal from Mimi on 6th min and then an equaliser almost straight away after 7 mins from Shanice….a great comeback final score 2-2.

So after league matches
Played 8
Won 2
Draw 2
Lost 4
points 8

This meant Vixens were placed 4th in the league with Sprowston 1st, Waveney Foxes 2nd and Firside Foxes 3rd. This put us.into the semi finals.

1st semi final was 1st placed team vs 4th placed team: Sprowston vs Vixens
2nd semi final was 2nd placed team vs 3rd placed team: Waveney Foxes vs Firside Foxes

After a long team talk advising the girls to forget the league results and concentrate only on the semi final…..against Sprowston…who beat us by 5-0 and 2 -0 so a tough task ahead.

Semi –final Vs Sprowston

This game was watched by the players and parents from all the other teams, who made it feel like a carnival atmosphere. The Vixens seemed to enjoy the crowd especially with the Waveney Foxes players singing “We love you Vixens, we do x3 oh vixens we love you” for the whole match.

With Charlea in goal, the Vixens started brightly and took the game to Sprowston with some half chances from Mimi and Shanice. Again, some hard fought battles in midfield with Maddie, Caitlin, Mimi and Shanice all getting stuck in and some great saves from Charlea. However, the score remained at 0-0 after 10 mins so extra time added another 4 mins. Both sets of players fought well trying to find a possible winning goal, but quickly the extra time ended and we were into penalties.

So a nervous time for all. With some great saves from Charlea and some great saves by the Sprowston goalie, the score was 1-1 after 5 pens each - meaning we were into sudden death. The Sprowston girls held their nerve to win 1-0.

A great effort by all. No one player stood out as the whole team performed really well and grew into the tournament as the day went on. Roll on the next Tournament on June 18th !
