Waveney Wildcats (12) v (2) Freethorpe

Waveney Wildcats U12's kicked off their new season against Freethorpe at Barnards Meadow on Sunday. Playing up a year and in their 1st ever competitive game, this was going to be a test but a test the management believed they could live up to. The game started brightly and was a bit scrappy in the middle with a few break away's but no one was really troubling either keeper once it got into the box. About 10 mins had gone when West's through ball was taken by Jake W-H and he finished with aplomb to put the Wildcats 1-0 up. Waveney continued to press Freethorpe, and were unfortunate that a number of through balls were ever so slightly over hit. Freethorpe were suddenly back in the game when a rather lucky shot come cross sailed over Mounts head and into the back of the net to level it at 1-1. No further goals followed in the first half with chances falling to both sides but neither could capitalise and the teams went in to the break on level terms.

The 2nd half kicked off in pretty much the same vein with half chances falling to both teams before a long shot was spilled by the Freethorpe keeper and West was there to pounce and put the ball into the empty net, 2-1 soon became 3-1 as Scott shot comfortably past the keeper. This gave Waveney a little bit of breathing space but Freethorpe had other ideas and some slack marking at the back allowed the Freethorpe forward to capitalise and make the game 3-2. Mount then made a worldy save on his debut to keep Freethopre from levelling the game, and this seemed to spur Waveney on to a much improved passage of play. Within minutes it was 4-2 Jake W-H slotted past the keeper, Waveney were then starting to find their feet and the back three of Caplin, Ling and McBurnie were holding off any attacks that Freethorpe could muster! At the other end the goals continued with Scott finding the net twice more for his Hatrick either side of a headed goal from Mirgaux to put Waveney 7-2 up and in full control. Then another debutant Everett was fouled in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, Everett picked himself up and duly slotted home the penalty for 8-2. By now unfortunately Freethorpe had given up slightly but Waveney were going strong and punished them with another 3 quick goals coming from West scoring his 150th goal for the club in only his 88th appearance, Everett and a 1st of the season for Lee, coolly slotting home after some good work from Sorrell upfront. The last and final goal was scored by Caplin who broke through from the half way line and slotted past the keeper and register his first goal for the season. A truly different and remarkable 2nd half with Waveney playing some great one and two touch football, and being clinical in front of goal was very pleasing to watch and a great start to the season.
