Waveney 5 St Andrews 2
Waveney end the season with a great win
Hadley and Ottoway Anglian Combination Premier Division
Waveney ended the season with a good performance in front of a bumper crowd of 180 people at The Amber Dew Events Stadium on tuesday night. We are grateful to Lowestoft Town for allowing us to play there and the lads responded and treated the large crowd to some excellent football. Waveney got off to a great start by going ahead on 5 minutes as Clay layed the ball into the path of Swan to smash past the keeper from close range. It wasn't long before Waveney added a second as Sam Clay's curling cross deceived the keeper from just outside the box as the ball sailed over his head and into the net. Waveney continued to dominate and were in command on the half hour mark. A super finish from Clay as a defence splitting pass from Connor Swan was dispatched, after rounding the keeper and firing home from a tight angle. St Andrews responded and reduced the arrears as there striker rounded James Bergin to score after he ran unopposed through the centre of our defence. We lost our shape and discipline and could have conceded a penalty five minutes after conceding that goal. We'd have had no complaints about it but the referee deemed the challenge to be fair. Just before the break Johnny Jarvis restored our three goal advantage with a fine strike. Jarvis exchanged passes with Swan just inside the box and he smashed a thunderbolt of a right foot volley past the St Andrews keeper. After the break we continued on top and on 65 minutes Sam Shepherd finished off from close range. Sam Clay and Nelson Carinhas combining to tee up Shepherd to fire home confidently after his fine run down the left. St Andrews scored there second goal as a pass back from High took a bobble up off the surface to deceive Bergin who kicked thin air and the ball trickled over the line. Waveney ended the game well and Jarvis was unlucky when his well timed header struck the post. Carinhas and Etheridge had a couple of chances to add to the scoreline but shot narrowly wide.In fact if anyone had deserved a goal it would have been Man of the match Anthony Etheridge who'd run himself in to the ground with a great display. Several good performances with Bloomfield and Jarvis dominating the middle of the park and Clay and Swan having there best game together but to be fair everyone played well. This win moves us up to 7th place 2 places down on last seasons excellent debut season in the division. With so many injuries and unavailability this season it's been tough but we ended the season with plenty of confidence to be challenging next season. If we can keep all of the current squad and make 2 or 3 additions we will be very competitive.
